The Empire Mine state historic park is home to the site of the oldest, largest, and richest gold mine in California. Truckee is a favorite for many seeking a fun Sierra experience.

Nevada County has some interesting towns to visit, including the mother lode towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City, as well as the mountain town of Truckee. All offering plenty of restaurants, lodging, shopping, and history.

There is an abundance of outdoor recreation available; Donner Lake is a favorite for many. The Donner Memorial State Park offers camping, hiking, and fishing.

There are several attractions within the county, including the Empire Mine. This State Park has displays of mining equipment, replicas of the mines head-frame, drilling samples, the stamp mill, and a model that mapped all of the mining tunnels. There are also 13 acres of beautiful pools, gardens, and buildings.

Close to Nevada City, is the Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park the location of one of the largest hydraulic mining operations during the California Gold Rush.

There are several museums, including the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum. The railroad ran 22 miles from Nevada City to Colfax, where it met the transcontinental line.

In winter there are several ski areas, including Soda Springs, Sugar Bowl, and Royal Gorge; the largest cross country ski area in North America.
